Presidio Building 640

CONTRACTOR:  Oliver & Company

PHOTOGRAPHY:  John Sutton

Sitting unused and held in suspension due to its historic legacy, NJAHS (National Japanese American Historic Society) hired us in 1998 to design a historic renovation and conversion from airplane hangar into an interpretive learning center. With the assistance of Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Mike Honda and many others, including the Department of Defense, funds were appropriated for construction.

Construction began, but the old rusted and bent structural steel members were too weak and the building collapsed on December 23, 2011. It was decided with the generous support of Oliver & Company, general contractors, to start again, but with a new building. Elements of the old building were preserved when possible. Now Building 640 stands ready to be filled with exhibits and activities—a blank canvas. Funds are being raised for the exhibits and staff through community donations.
